The Monmouth Cancer Coalition Presents: Chemo Girl's Day Out

As part of National Breast Cancer Month, on October 27, 2011, the Monmouth Cancer Coalition presented "Chemo Girls' Day Out," a morning of food, fun and healing for women currently living with cancer and the side effects of treatment.  A truly collaborative effort of representatives from state and local government, community healthcare providers, and prominent local figures in the cancer support community, "Chemo Girls' Day Out" offered hands-on instruction and demonstrations by nutrition, exercise and beauty experts who regularly work with women in cancer treatment to help them look and feel beautiful and empowered.

While mortality rates are declining for nearly all cancer types, Monmouth County cancer rates continue to exceed national and statewide averages.  According to the American Cancer Society, 67 individuals in Monmouth County are diagnosed with cancer each week, and 27 will die.   Monmouth County is 9th highest for mortality rates and 12th highest for incidence rates in all cancers combined in New Jersey.   Breast cancer has the highest incidence rates among women.

The fight against cancer goes beyond treatment.   Physical and emotional supports are critically needed to optimize recovery at all stages.   'Chemo Girls' Day Out' was envisioned by Senator Jennifer Beck and Marybeth Maida, author of Beauty Pearls for Chemo Girls, to help meet these needs as women deal with the debilitating effects of chemotherapy.

The event featured speakers Senator Jennifer Beck of the the 12th Legislative District, Theresa Beck RN, MPA, CHPN Chief Mission Officer and Vice President of Community Initiatives for the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey (VNACJ), Marybeth Maida, breast cancer survivor and author of Beauty Pearls for Chemo Girls, Bridget A. Murphy, CFRE Chief Philanthropy Officer for Visiting Nurse Association Health Group, John Nies, trainer and owner of The Power Center in Red Bank, Amy Saffioti, RD, a Clinical Registered Dietitian at Monmouth Medical Center, Sari from Millagro Spa, a full services spa located in Monmouth County and special guest Michele Gannon of Mary's Place by the Sea.

Attendees received complimentary gift bags and  a free copy of Beauty Pearls for Chemo Girls, thanks to The Beauty Foundation for Women's Cancer Care.
