Monmouth Cancer Coalition Presents Program on Palliative Care

INTRODUCTION TO PALLIATIAVE CARE

WHAT IS IT?

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

WHAT SHOULD EVERYONE KNOW ABOUT IT?

The Monmouth Cancer Coalition sponsors an educational program on palliative care at senior centers throughout the county.   The program was presented to 85 seniors on February 6, 2008 for the Colts Neck Seniors and will be given again in Millstone and Old Bridge on April 8 and 9, 2008. An additional program will be held September 4, 2008, at the Bayshore Wellness Center at Hazlet.

The purpose of the program is to raise awareness about palliative care and its benefits as an important treatment option for individuals with cancer or chronic illness.   The program helps to dispel myths and offered guidance about how to speak to physicians about palliative care.

The speakers include three palliative care nurses from the Monmouth Cancer Coalition:    Barbara Eklund, Director of Hospice Services at Monmouth Medical Center, the Saint Barnabas Hospice & Palliative Care Center and Theresa A. Beck, RN of Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey. Other expert palliative care nurses also provide important input into the presentations.   All are advocates of palliative care and leaders in their field.

The program is offered upon request to seniors throughout the county.   For more information, contact the Coalition Coordinator at 732-418-3219 or pvirga@newsolutionsinc.com.
