Jersey Girl Breast Cancer Study

Current study of the onset of puberty's effect on breast cancer risk

There is growing evidence that early life factors, such as an early onset of puberty, have a significant impact on breast cancer risk. The Jersey Girl Study, a collaboration of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, UMDNJ's School of Public Health, the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute, and the NJ Family Medicine Research Network, is currently being conducted to understand how the onset of puberty is affected by environmental, hormonal and nutritional factors in NJ girls.  Healthy 9 and 10 year old girls are currently being recruited to participate in the study.  Approximately 100 girls are already participating, and investigators hope to enroll another 50-100 girls.  To view an article on the study, go to: http://www.breastcancerfund.org/site/apps/nl/content.asp?c=kwKXLdPaE&b=86071&ct=4909973
