Mammography Recommendations Discussed at Quarterly Meeting
Monmouth Cancer Coalition responds to new recommendations on breast cancer screening.
At the March 4, 2010 quarterly meeting of the Monmouth Cancer Coalition, guest speaker Dr. Kenneth Tomkovich, Director of Breast Imaging and Interventions at the Freehold Radiology Group and
CentraState
Medical
Center, presented a stimulating analysis of the new federal guidelines on breast cancer screening.
He cited recent articles from the Annals of Internal Medicine and commentaries both in favor and opposition of the recommendations on mammography.
Dr. Tomkovich has spoken on this subject at various venues throughout the county.
He explained in detail the failings of the USPSTF reasoning for recommending less mammography screening.
Dr. Melinda Staiger, Atlantic Medical Imaging offered comment agreeing with Dr. Tomkovich's point of view.
Members of the Coalition were supportive of their position and suggested taking an activist position in opposition to the new recommendations.
